“Heaven metal.” That’s exactly how Denver multi-instrumentalist Madeline Johnston, aka Midwife, refers to her music, and there is indeed something both theatrically burdened and uplifting in her music. But the metal label is largely a mimicry, as is true of other bands on The Flenser label.
Backwards guitar weaves shake hands with ambient backing tracks and dream pop here, and albums like the sad Forever, which Midwife dedicated to late friend and musician Colin Ward, sound at once lo-fi yet timeless in their stylings.
“Anyone can fall in love/ Anyone can play guitar/ Anyone can tell a lie,” she sings on one of her extremely fragile songs, which she’s now premiering in the fitting surroundings of the Libeň Synagogue.
